School floors work hard. Specifying them shouldn't have to be.
From classrooms to corridors, the right flooring has to balance performance, maintenance, budget and design.
Here's what we think is worth considering.

Not every square foot of a school asks the same thing of a floor.
A classroom needs to support everyday learning. Corridors see near-constant traffic. Cafeterias add spills, chairs and rolling loads. Libraries call for something quieter and calmer.
Start with what happens in the space. Then specify for it.

THICKNESS
Overall thickness is one part of an LVT specification, but thicker doesn't automatically mean better. Construction, intended application and performance characteristics matter alongside gauge.
WEAR LAYER
The wear layer is the clear layer above the printed visual of an LVT product. In commercial LVT, you'll commonly encounter 20 mil (.020") wear layers, including products designed for education and other demanding commercial environments.
Think of wear layer as one piece of the performance story — not the whole story.
ASTM F1700
ASTM F1700 is the standard specification covering solid vinyl flooring in modular tile and plank formats. It establishes classifications and physical-performance requirements, including dimensions, dimensional stability, residual indentation, flexibility, and resistance to chemicals, heat and light. Under the standard, Class III refers to printed-film vinyl flooring protected by a clear wear layer.

The floor gets installed once. It gets cleaned thousands of times.
Maintenance matters.
Consider the cleaning protocol, finish requirements, stain and chemical resistance, repairability and long-term maintenance demands — especially in schools where facilities teams are responsible for enormous amounts of square footage.
Traditional VCT maintenance can involve stripping, waxing and polishing, while many commercial LVT systems are designed around lower-maintenance or no-polish protocols. The exact requirements always depend on the product and manufacturer.
Specify for the people maintaining the space, too.

VCT
A longstanding education flooring option. Economical material cost, broad commercial history and straightforward visuals — but typically with a more involved maintenance program.
LVT
Offers a wider range of visual possibilities — including wood, stone, terrazzo and graphic looks — with commercial constructions and maintenance programs that can make it attractive for education environments. LVT is widely used across education and other commercial segments.
The better question isn't simply “LVT or VCT?”
It's: what does this space need to do?

Performance gets a floor specified. Design determines how the space feels.
Color can help with wayfinding.
Pattern can create movement.
Materiality can bring warmth.
Changes in flooring can define spaces without adding walls.
And a coordinated palette can connect classrooms, corridors and shared spaces into one cohesive environment.
Schools are functional spaces. They're human spaces, too.

A flooring specification is more than a thickness and a wear layer.
Consider the entire system — product construction, performance, finish, maintenance, installation, certifications, warranty and, of course, design.
